CIRCULEIGHT

CIRCULEIGHT is a 20-minute immersive installation at Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik, built around eight elements of the Icelandic landscape: lava, basalt, glacier, water, flora, algae, microorganisms and volcanic gas. It was ARTECHOUSE’s first international project, opening in early 2022 in a space Harpa dedicated to the partnership, inspired by the recent Fagradalsfjall eruption and timed to Harpa’s 10th anniversary.

Music: a medley from Högni Egilsson’s original score for CIRCULEIGHT. Documentation footage from Harpa.

I was the sole TouchDesigner developer on the piece. I built the full set of interactive scenes that accompany the original score by Högni Egilsson, working directly with him so that elements in each scene respond to the music in real time. My role covered concept, design, iteration and interaction design, and I coordinated with the creative director and studio as the work developed.

To bring the audience into it, I used an Ouster lidar sensor to capture the whole room, so visitors’ silhouettes shape the visuals on the walls.

Select generative systems were adapted to TouchDesigner, with permission, from the work of Wyatt Flanders.
