Blooming Strings

Blooming Strings is an interactive installation across eight Transparent OLED panels by LG Display. I created it as part of ARTECHOUSE Studio for PIXELBLOOM: Timeless Butterflies at ARTECHOUSE DC, which ran from March to September 2023. The piece marked the start of a partnership between ARTECHOUSE and LG Display and was shown in the exhibition’s media lab space.

The panels are lined up in a row and treated as a single digital instrument. An Ouster lidar sensor tracks where people are in the room. As visitors walk along the line of screens, vines bloom and monarch butterflies come to life on the panels nearest them, and each activation triggers a sound, so moving through the space “plays” the screens. Entering or leaving the room sends a wave of butterflies and petals across all eight displays.

I built the entire interactive system in TouchDesigner, including the visuals and sound triggering, and designed the sound in Ableton Live. I was also part of the creative process, from iterating on the concept to shaping the interaction and user experience.
